A Dressage Lesson E-mail

When I started riding only a few years ago,  I took lessons from a teacher with a dressage background.  Now I am still taking lessons from the same teacher, Linda Bushnell, at Riga Meadow and have reached the point where I feel I am just beginning to learn the basics!

We are also taking a lessons from  Trish Helmer, who managed to squeeze us into a very busy schedule.  Trish is at Shinto Farm at Cogi, about a 40 minute drive from us.  But it will be worth taking our horses there for lessons.  The truth is, we kind of get along together and she is terribly curious about the Icelandic horses. We have been raving so much about Trish that our friend, Martina Gates, came up with her well-trained stallion, Stigandi.  She was curious about Trish and Trish was curious about Stigandi.

So Martina came and took a lesson on Stigandi.  Here is an excerpt.

And here is what it looks like at the trot.

Then we had a visitor.  Another black stallion,  just like Stigandi.

Well, not quite like Stigandi.

Now I really needed a shot of the two of them riding side by side for comparison.

And of course Martina could not resist...

Speaking of riding large horses....

Trish thought I should have the "feel" of doing a piaffe on a dressage horse.  She has some Grand Prix horses at Shinto Farm and I should come down and ride one.

Speaking of dressage, here is a part of a dressage lesson in Iceland, where Mette Mannseth, of Hólar, is teaching 5 year old Ingunn.  This is actually part of an Amazon S3 test. But take a look at the whole sequence.

I loved watching these videos! Thank you so much for sharing. Watching Trish work with someone is always wonderful, and inspiring. I rode with her years ago, and also had the pleasure of riding her Fresian, Excalibur, in that same arena (at Shinto Farm). Glad you had such a good experience and shared it. I loved watching Stigandi and seeing the fine points that really come across in your video.
